The Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for all of New York City's transportation needs. They are tasked with developing and maintaining a transportation system that safely, efficiently, and responsibly moves people and goods throughout the City. The DOT also encourages the use of mass transit and sustainable modes of transportation to decrease traffic and congestion on City streets. The DOT has a staff of over 4,000 that oversees approximately 5,800 miles of streets, sidewalks, and highways, as well as 789 bridge structures, including six tunnels.
