Agency: Police
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is responsible for the safety and security of the public. The NYPD must respond to emergency calls in a timely fashion and conduct investigations into crimes. In addition to the 76 local precincts, which provide daily patrol and emergency response services, the Department also addresses transit, traffic, housing and school safety with special units for such services. The Department also has special units assigned for rare emergencies and terrorist events, including aviation or harbor emergencies. The Department serves as a community liaison through its Community Affairs Unit. Raymond W. Kelly is the commissioner of the NYPD; for more information, go to www.nyc.gov/nypd.
