Agency: Correction

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates in the City's jails, with the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of the public, inmates, and staff. The DOC provides health services, living quarters, transportation services, recreational activities, and post-release planning to all inmates. The average daily inmate population under DOC's jurisdiction fluctuates between 13,000 and 18,000 people. The Department controls 10 jail buildings on Rikers Island and four borough detention centers. The majority of inmates at these facilities are awaiting trial; the rest are serving a misdemeanor sentence or awaiting transfer to a state prison. Martin F. Horn is the commissioner of DOC; for more information, go to www.nyc.gov/doc.
